چکیده

The peripheral and central auditory systems undergo tremendous changes with normal aging. In this review, we focus on the effects of age on processing complex acoustic signals (such as speech and music) amid other sounds, which requires a set of computations known as auditory scene analysis. Auditory scene analysis is the process whereby the brain assigns parts of the acoustic wave derived from an amalgamation of physical sound sources into perceptual objects (such as words or notes) or streams (such as ongoing speech or music). Solving the scene analysis problem, therefore, depends on listeners’ ability to perceptually organize sounds that occur simultaneously and sequentially. The perceptual organization of sounds is thought to involve low-level automatic processes that group sounds that are similar in physical attributes such as frequency, intensity, and location, as well as higher-level schema-driven processes that reflect listeners’ experience and knowledge of the auditory environment. In this chapter, we review prior research that has examined the effects of age on concurrent and sequential stream segregation. We will present evidence supporting the existence of an agerelated change in auditory scene analysis that appears to be limited to concurrent sound segregation. Evidence also suggests that older adults may rely more on schemadriven processes than young adults to solve the scene analysis problem. The usefulness of auditory scene analysis as a conceptual framework for interpreting and studying age-related changes in sound perception is discussed.

Age-related Differences in the Perceptual Organization of Speech Sounds

Aging is associated with a decline in the ability to understand what a person is saying in the presence of other sounds. This study investigated the perceptual organization of speech in young (n=20) and older adults (n=20). Four vowels were arranged into six sequences, defined by either continuous or discontinuous first-formant transitions. Participants first made an objective response (choosin...

Organization of Hierarchical Perceptual Sounds: Music Scene Analysis with Autonomous Processing Modules and a Quantitative Information Integration Mechanism

We propose a process model for hierarchical perceptual sound organization, which recognizes perceptual sounds included in incoming sound signals. We consider perceptual sound organization as a scene analysis problem in the auditory domain. Our model consists of multiple processing modules and a hypothesis network for quantitative integration of multiple sources of information. When input inform...

Compressed Domain Scene Change Detection Based on Transform Units Distribution in High Efficiency Video Coding Standard

Scene change detection plays an important role in a number of video applications, including video indexing, searching, browsing, semantic features extraction, and, in general, pre-processing and post-processing operations. Several scene change detection methods have been proposed in different coding standards. Most of them use fixed thresholds for the similarity metrics to determine if there wa...

Application of Bayesian Probability Network to Music Scene Analysis

We propose a process model for hierarchical perceptual sound organization, which recognizes perceptual sounds included in incoming sound signals. We consider perceptual sound organization as a scene analysis problem in the auditory domain. Our current application is a music scene analysis system, which recognizes rhythm, chords, and source-separated musical notes included in incoming music sign...

Neurophysiological Mechanisms Involved in Auditory Perceptual Organization

In our complex acoustic environment, we are confronted with a mixture of sounds produced by several simultaneous sources. However, we rarely perceive these sounds as incomprehensible noise. Our brain uses perceptual organization processes to independently follow the emission of each sound source over time. If the acoustic properties exploited in these processes are well-established, the neuroph...
